After the events in Giant Size X-Men #1, Professor Xavier congratulates the new team members in their battle with Krakoa and begins to discuss the team’s future. Sunfire immediately tells Xavier he wants nothing to do with the team; Nightcrawler and Colossus are unsure, but join; Storm and Wolverine quickly commit to the new team; Banshee hesitates, thinking he is too old, but ultimately joins the team. Next, Angel tells Xavier that the old team members are grown up now and are leaving to “live their own lives”. Cyclops is undecided, but eventually decides to stay and is torn from having to leave Jean. After the old team leaves, Cyclops begins an intense training regimen with the new team in the Danger Room.
In Colorado, Count Nefaria and his Ani-Men take over the NORAD base deep within Valhalla Mountain and arm the Doomsmith Command System. Nefaria demands a ransom from every nation or he will launch the entire inventory of U.S. nuclear missiles. The X-Men end up responding to a call intended for the Avengers, who were unable to help. As they approach, a set of missiles destroys most of the Blackbird and then a sonic disruptor causes the Blackbird’s lifting body to disappear, leaving the X-Men plunging through the atmosphere.
Notes: This issue marks a new beginning for the X-Men and in more ways than one. Not only does this issue end many months of re-printed stories, but it also introduces a new team. It is quite noteworthy that the new X-Men fast become extremely popular, far surpassing the original X-Men in sales. The new team end up making the X-Men one of Marvel's top selling titles for many years.
Features the Hostess Twinkies ad, Captain Marvel In The Big Bang!!
This is the first Hostess ad to appear in this title.

The X-Men are re-entering Earth's atmosphere aboard a crippled Starcore space shuttle with Jean Grey piloting the ship.
The Starcore ship crash lands into the Jamaica Bay, and all but Jean Grey swim out of the ship to safety. Cyclops is about to go back down under to find her, as emerges from the water, shouting her name to be Phoenix before fainting and falling into the water. They swim to shore and see that they have once again destroyed the Kennedy Airport.
They are all then shown at the hospital, waiting for Jean's diagnosis. The doctor announces that Jean is okay, and the X-Men rejoice, especially Scott. The Professor announces that all but Scott must take a forced vacation to Cassiday Keep, Banshee's home.
They arrive there, where Black Tom Cassiday is currently living there. They all get situated, and head to dinner, as a trap door opens up, sending them all tumbling down to face Juggernaut and Black Tom. Storm screams in fear, and the rest of the team are confused as to why.
This issue is credited as Black Tom's first appearance even though he appears in the shadows in three panels in issue #99

It is up to Nightcrawler to rescue the captured X-Men from the clutches of the Juggernaut and Black Tom Cassidy. He is not alone, however, for he has the help of some very unusual allies... Leprechauns from Cassidy Deep. He discovers Eric the Red is behind this battle. He also discovers a new feature of his own mutant powers: in shadows, his body becomes invisible.
Black Tom is torturing the other X-Men and Nightcrawler uses his image inducer to look like Xavier and starts a battle with the two villains. During this, Juggernaut punches through the wall, revealing the sky to Storm, who was in a claustrophobic panic, but is now free to use her powers and she helps Wolverine and Colossus to escape with a hurricane. Black Tom and Juggernaut have Banshee as their captive and blackmail the X-Men, but the X-Men fight back, and Nightcrawler frees Banshee. After a sword fight with his cousin (their mutant powers cancel each other), Banshee throws Black Tom from the tower and Juggernaut jumps in the water after him.
At the end, Eric the Red talks to a strange man on a TV, who tells him that Princess Neramani is coming and he tells Eric that she must not be allowed to contact the X-Men. Eric ends saying he has found a worthy ally and we see Magneto on one of the screens.

The X-Men have returned to the United States from Muir Island and have caught someone lurking in their headquarters.
As the X-Men arrive back home, they discover Eric the Red has infiltrated the mansion and they attack, unaware that Eric has enlisted the aid of Firelord, the former Herald of Galactus. Eric detected Firelord last issue and ordered Havok and Polaris (who were under Eric's control) to attack him, knowing Firelord would easily defeat them. Eric then deceives Firelord into thinking that Havok, Polaris, and the other X-Men seek to destroy him in order to rule the world.
Meanwhile, Lilandra teleports to Earth (specifically, the flat that Jean Grey and Misty Knight share) and just as her ship is destroyed, she appears before Xavier, who recalls her from his visions. Firelord arrives to confront Xavier but is opposed by Phoenix, leaving Xavier and Lilandra to be captured by Eric. The X-Men arrive too late to prevent Eric escaping with Lilandra. Phoenix blasts Firelord to New Jersey and uses her powers to reactivate the stargate, allowing the X-Men to pursue Eric. Firelord returns and demands to know where Phoenix is and threatens Xavier.

Synopsis
After just freeing themselves from the control of Mesmero, the X-Men storm the villain's carnival trailer!
Plot Summary
The X-Men confront Magneto in Mesmero's carnival trailer. Scott senses a trap and orders Nightcrawler to scout outside, but he's startled to discover that the trailer is now floating miles high in the air. Magneto explains how he followed Beast to discover the X-Men, and that he stopped Mesmero because he wants to be the one to exact revenge on the X-Men. Magneto floats Mesmero down to the Amazon while the flying trailer continues on to his secret underground lair in Antarctica.
Once there he engages them in battle and makes quick work of the unorganized team who fight him one-on-one rather than as a unit (much to the chagrin of Cyclops). After capturing every X-Men, he restrains them all in mechanical chairs which scramble their neural impulses and make using their powers or even speaking impossible. Magneto introduce them to the Nanny, a robot he created to take care of them. As the X-Men realize the trouble they are in, Magneto vows that they will suffer the same humiliation he did when he was trapped fully conscious in the body of a six-month old child.
